Overlooking the River Mawddach, as it approaches its estuary at Barmouth, Cregennan is a popular location that nestles below the lofty summit of Cadair Idris. Cregennan’s twin lakes provide a well-known fishing location and for walkers there are numerous paths, some more challenging, that reach the highest summits in the locality. Cregennan is owned and cared for by the National Trust, and is situated 800 ft above Barmouth, allowing the harbour and the mile long estuary rail viaduct to be clearly seen.
Beyond the Mawddach estuary the expanse of the northern Cardigan Bay can be viewed. The Llŷn Peninsula runs along the horizon and Bardsey Island is easily seen at the end of the headland, some 30 miles distant from Cregennan. As this set of images demonstrates, the location is ideal for observing sunsets, which all seem to be uniquely characterised; hence the frequent visits made here by me, as well as many other photographers.
